That night, while the princes are out rampaging through the forest in their wolf forms, their howls splitting the night air, I retreat into the tower again. This time, instead of being distracted by the books, I start looking for hiding places.

I don’t know why, but after dinner, I started wondering if maybe there were notes or books or objects that were hidden here, things that were concealed by the one now cursed to hide here in its snake form. I know that the creature is probably behind the other door at the top of the tower, the one that’s locked. I wonder what it eats, and what sort of living space it has. It’s reptilian, so I wonder if it’s cold blooded, and if so, how miserable its little room must be. I was terrified of the creature before, but now I’m sympathetic. And I have questions.

I find a loose floorboard under the lab bench. I have to crawl on my hands and knees all the way under the heavy furniture, but when I lean on one end of the board, it pops up on the other end. I jimmy it out of the way, and in the bottom of the space I find an ornate metal box. I pull the little object out of its hiding place and into the light from the candles.

The box is barely bigger than my hand, and it’s made of lead. It’s etched with magical symbols and the top has an inset silver sigil. I don’t recognize the mark, but it makes my wolf afraid, which is interesting. I run my hand over it, and emerald sparks flash beneath my touch, tingling against my skin. As soon as the little burst of light subsides, the box pops open.

Inside is a brass key, resting on a bed of folded parchment. A red crystal shimmers in the key’s handle, held in place by the vine-like interweaving of the metal. Tentatively, I take the key out of the box.

As soon as the crystal touches my hand, I’m blasted across the room and into the bookcases, which shatter under the force. Books tumble around me, bouncing off my head and body along with broken pieces of the shelf. I roll onto my hands and knees, dazed, and when I open my eyes, a shining circle appears in front of me, flat like a mirror but displaying a scene.

A much younger version of my father, Riori, stands in a forest clearing. A she-wolf I do not know enters, holding a baby in her arms. Beside her walks a man who is obviously a witch. He’s got black hair and intelligent eyes, and the upside-down pentacle he wears around his neck flashes with emerald fire.

The witch speaks, but I can’t hear him with my ears. Instead, his words play out inside my mind. “Take the child and hide her in your pack,” he tells my father. “Raise her as your own. Someday she will bridge the distance between witch and wolf.
